Vintage 1940’s Two-Tone Shell Pattern Bag #1030

MATERIALS:
Chadwick’s Red Heart Knitting Worsted, 1 oz – 3 balls of Main Color [MC]
J & P Coats or Clark’s ONT Pearl Cotton, size #5 – 2 balls of Contrast Color [CC]
Bone Crochet Hook #5
¼ yd Felt
2 Bone Rings
11” Zipper
½ yd Grosgrain Ribbon

NOTE:  Use knitting worsted single; use 3 threads of pearl cotton together.

GAUGE:
1 sc & 1 shell = 1”
2 rows = 1”

BOTTOM:
Starting at center with MC, ch 2.

1ST RND:   6 Sc in 2nd ch from hk.

2ND RND:  2 Sc in each sc around [12 sc].

3RD RND:  * Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc.  Rep from * around [18 sc].

4TH & 5TH RNDS:  Sc in each sc around.

6TH RND:  Rep 3rd rnd [27 sc].

7TH RND:  Rep 4th rnd.

8TH RND:  * 2 Sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc.  Rep from * around [36 sc].

9TH & 10TH RNDS:  Rep 4th rnd.

11TH RND:  * 2 Sc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc.  Rep from * around [45 sc].

12TH RND:  Rep 4th rnd.

13TH RND:  * 2 Sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc.  Rep from * around [60 sc].

14TH RND:  Rep 4th rnd.

TOP:
15TH RND:  * Sk 1 sc, 5 dc in next sc [shell made], sk 1 sc, sc in next sc.  Rep from * around.  Drop MC.

16TH RND:  Attach CC & make sc in each st around.  Drop CC.

17TH RND:  Pick up MC.  * Sk 2 sc, sc in next sc, sk 2 sc, 5 dc in next sc.  Rep from * around.  Drop MC.

18TH TO 21ST RNDS INCL:  Rep 16th & 17th rnds alternately.

22ND, 23RD & 24TH RNDS:  With MC, * sc in center st of shell, shell in next sc.  Rep from * around.

25TH TO 30TH RNDS INCL:  Rep 16th & 17th rnds alternately.

31ST & 32ND RNDS:  Rep 22nd rnd.

At end of 32nd rnd, sl st in next st.  Fasten off.

HANDLE:
Ch 6.

1ST ROW:  Sc in 2nd ch from hk & in each ch across.  Ch 1, turn.

2ND ROW:  Sc in each sc across.  Ch 1, turn.

Rep 2nd row until piece meas 18”.

Line handle with ribbon to prevent strap from stretching.

FINISHING:
Cut piece of cardboard for bottom, then line bag with felt.

Sew zipper in place across top.

Sew rings at sides.

Sew handle to rings.
[Original instructions omitted that rings should first be completely covered with CC in sc.]


MISS JULIA’S PURSE LINING NOTES:
Make paper patt for each crocheted piece before joinings & lay aside to be used later.

Cut lining according to paper patts & sew tog. 

Shirr lining bag form to correspond with crocheted bag.

Insert finished lining in bag.  Sew in zipper [if desired].

Note: 
Cardboard or lightweight plastic may be inserted between bag & lining to give shape of bag extra support.
