Vintage 1943 Girl’s Cable Coat & Hat Set #B103

Your little girl is delicious in this cable pattern ensemble for that afternoon stroll with mother…just the thing to wear to get those beneficial sunrays!

SIZE:  3 - 5 years
Size can be adjusted by changing size of needles & yarn.

MATERIALS:
#3 & #5 Knitting Needles
4 Knitting Worsted, 3½ four ounce skeins
Crochet Hook
Ribbon

GAUGE: 
6 sts = 1”

COAT:  BACK: 
With #5 needles, cast on 136 sts.

K 2, p 2, for 2 rows.

P 2, k 2, for 2 rows.

Rep these 4 rows for l½”.

NEXT ROW:  P 12, *K 2, P 6, K 2, P 24, rep from * 2 more times, end row K 2, P 6, K 2, P 12.

NEXT ROW:  K 12, *P 2, K 6, P 2, K 24, rep from *2 more times, end row P 2, K 6, P 2, K 12.

Rep these 2 rows working first cable on 4th row of patt, on each K 6 rib, then every 6th row. 

[To work cable, sl first 3 sts on dp needle, fold back of work, K next 3 sts, K 3 sts from dp needle].

Work first dec row on first cable row.

1ST DEC ROW:  K 2 tog, K 10, * P 2, K 6, P 2, K 11, K2 tog, K 11, rep from * 2 more times, end P 2, K 6, P 2, K 10, K 2 tog. 

Work 5 rows even.

2ND DEC ROW:  K 11, * P 2, K 6, P 2, K 10, K2 tog, K 11 rep from * 2 more times, end P 2, K 6, P 2; K 11. 

Work 5 rows even.

3RD DEC ROW:  K 2 tog, K 9, * P 2, K 6, P 2, K 10, K 2 tog, K 10, rep from * 2 more times, end P 2, K 6, P 2, K 9, K 2 tog.

Cont to dec in this manner, dec in 3 center gores every 6th row & in 2 end gores * every 12th row, until 75 sts rem [Dec 4 sts less for size 5, 79 sts].

Work even until piece meas 12½” from beg [13½”, size 5].

NEXT ROW:  Now disc patt & K 1 Row.

NEXT ROW:  P 1 Row.

Bind off 5 sts at beg of next 2 rows.

K 2 sts tog at beg of every row 8 times [57 sts].

Work even until piece meas 5” (5½”, size 5], meas straight up from where 5 sts were bound off.

Bind off 4 sts at beg of next 8 rows.

Bind off rem 25 sts.

LEFT FRONT: 
With #5 needles, cast on 76 sts.

Work border same as back for 1½”.

Now work 8 sts in border patt, P 12, K 2, P 6, K 2, P 24, K 2, P 6, K 2, P 12.

NEXT ROW:  K 12, P 2, K 6, P 2, K 24, P 2, K 6, P 2, K 12, work last 8 sts in border patt.

Twist cables on 4th Row & dec on same Row as follows: K 2 tog, K 10, P 2, K 6, P 2, K 111 K 2 tog K 11, P 2, K6, P 2, K 11, K 2 tog, [K last st of K 12 gore tog with first st of border patt], finish border.

Cont same as back, [dec in K 12 gores every 12th Row, & in center gore every 6th Row, twisting cables every 6th Row] until piece measures 12 ½“ from beg [45 sts].

NEXT ROW:  Bind off 5 sts at beg of row at underarm & work yoke as for back.
K 2 tog at beg of each Row at underarm 6 times.

Work even until piece meas 4” [4 ½”, size 5], meas straight up from where 5 sts were bound off.

Bind off 12 sts at beg of next Row at neck edge. 

K 2 tog at beg of every Row at neck edge, 6 times.

When piece meas 5” from where 5 sts were bound off, bind off 4 sts at beg of every Row at armhole edge, 4 times.

RIGHT FRONT: 
Work to correspond to left front, work 5 buttonholes 1 ½” apart as follows:  Work to within last 8 sts, K 2, bind off 3, K 3.

NEXT ROW:  Cast on 3 sts over those bound off.  Place pin ½” from neck.

LEFT FRONT: 
Place 4 more pins 1½“ apart. 

Work buttonholes where pins are placed.

SLEEVE: 
With #3 needles, cast on 36 sts [40 sts, size 5]. 

Work border same as on back for 1½”.

NEXT ROW:  Change to #5 needles & K 1 Row,

NEXT ROW:  P 1 Row.

When piece meas 2” from beg, inc 1 st each side & cont to inc 1 st each side every inch until piece meas 9” from beg [52 sts].

Work 1” even or desired length to underarm.

Now bind off 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows.

Dec 1 st each side every 4th row until 30 sts rem.  [3¼” straight up from where 4 sts were bound off.])

Dec 1 st at beg & end of every row 6 times. 

Bind off rem 18 sts.

COLLAR: 
Sew shoulder seams tog.

With #5 needles, sk 5 sts, pick up 54 sts to within 5 sts at other end of row.  K 2, P 2, for 6 sts, P to within last 6 sts, K 2, P 2, to end of Row.

NEXT ROW:  K 2, P 2, K 1, inc in next st, K to within last 7 sts, inc 1 st, K 2, P 2, K 2.

Cont in same manner, inc 6th st at beg of row & 7th st from end of row on every K row until piece meas 2”.

Work border patt for 6 rows.

Bind off loosely. 

Sew fronts & back tog; sew sleeves tog & insert into armholes with seams meeting at underarm, & easing in fullness at top of sleeve.

BONNET: 
With #5 needles, cast on 8 sts, P back.

2ND ROW:  Inc in each st [16 sts] P back.

3RD & ALL UNEVEN ROWS:  P.

4TH ROW:  *Inc 1 st, K 1 st, rep from *across Row [24 sts], P back.

6TH ROW:  *Inc 1 st, K 2 sts, rep from *across Row. 

Cont in same manner, have 1 more st bet each inc, until 12 sts bet each inc [112 sts]. 

Work even for 1”.

Now bind off 13 sts at beg of next 2 rows [back of cap], * work 1” even, now dec 1 st at each end & 7 sts spaced at equal distances apart, rep from *once.

BRIM: 
K 1 Row on P side of cap.

Now P back & K next Row [right side of brim], inc every 4th st across Row.

NEXT ROW:  P.

NEXT ROW:  K.

NEXT ROW:  * P 4 sts, sl these 4 P sts on sep needle, P to end of Row.

NEXT ROW:  * K 4, sl these 4 sts on another sep needle, K across Row, rep from *until you have 32 sts on each sep needle, meanwhile make 3 more inc rows on every 6th Row, have 1 more st bet each inc. 

P back & P 32 sts from sep needle, now K back & K 32 sts from other needle.

K 1 Row on P side of work [to turn], now K 1 Row, P 1 Row, next K Row, dec every 7th st, P back.

Bind off 4 sts at beg of every Row until 32 sts bound off on each side, meanwhile make 3 more dec rows on every 6th Row same as you inc, bind off.

FINISHING: 
Sew crown tog. 

Sc around sides & back of cap. 

Cut piece of crinoline to fit brim, insert inside of brim & sew tog. 

Sew ribbons & turn back.
