Vintage 1946 Double Breasted Two-Piece Suit #146 - Knit


SIZES:  14, 16 18
Directions are for size 14. 
Sizes 16 and 18 are in brackets.

MATERIALS: 
Fleisher’s Nubbee 25 [ 26, 28 ] skeins
#2 Circular knitting needle - 27 ins         
#2 Pair straight needles
#3 crochet hook      
Buttons, shoulder pads, ribbon and elastic for waist.

MEASUREMENTS: 
JACKET --
At bustline when buttoned 33 [ 35, 37 ] ins.
Width of each front at underarm, including overlap 10 [ 10 ½, 11 ] ins.
Sleeves -- width at underarm 12 [ 12 ½, 13 ] ins.
SKIRT: 
Width at lower edge 60 [ 62 ½, 65 ¾ ] ins.  Hipline, including allowance for pleated patt  36 ½ [ 38, 39 ½] ins.  Waist line 26 [ 28, 30 ] ins.  Length --desired length.

GAUGE: 
15 sts = 2 ins; 
11 rows [ or rnds ] = 1 in.

BACK
Cast on 112 [ 120, 128 ] sts. 

K 1 row, p 1 row for 8 rows.

9th row:  P.

10th row:  K. 

Repeat these 10 rows for patt, dec 1 st each side every 1 in - 6 times.

Work even until 7 ins from beg on 100 [ 108, 116 ] sts. 

Inc 1 st each side of next row; repeat inc every ¾ in - 6 times; every ½ in - 3 times. 

Work even until 14 ins from beg [ end with 4th row of k stripe ] 120 [ 128, 136 ] sts.

Armholes: 
Bind off at beg of next 2 rows 6 [ 7, 8 ] sts. 

Dec 1 st each side every 2nd row 7 [ 8, 9 ] times.

Work even on 94 [ 98, 102 ] sts until length of armhole above underarm is 3 ¾ [ 4, 4 ] ins. 

Inc 1 st each side of next row.  Repeat inc every 1 in twice.  

Work even on 100 [ 104, 108 ] sts until length of armhole above underarm is 6 ¾ [ 7, 7 ¼ ] ins.

Shoulders: 
At beg of next 2 rows, bind off 6 [ 7, 8 ] sts. 

Bind off 7 sts at beg of next 8 rows.  Bind off 32 [ 34, 36 ] sts.

LEFT FRONT: 
Cast on 71 [ 74, 78 ] sts. 

Work same as back, keeping front edge even, shaping underarm edge and armhole as for back at beg of rows worked from right side until 6 ins above underarm, end at front edge with 9th patt row-- 65 [ 66, 68 ] sts.

NECK
Bind off 22 sts; finish row. 

Dec 1 st at neck edge every row 9 [ 9, 10 ] times, shaping shoulder as for back when armhole is same length as back.

RIGHT FRONT: 
Work to correspond to left front for 13 rows.

Buttonholes: 
Work to within 19 sts of front edge, bind off 2 sts for buttonhole, work until 12 sts from buttonhole, bind off 2 sts for 2nd buttonhole, finish row. 

Cast on 2 sts over each buttonhole on next row. 

Finish to correspond to Left Front, repeating buttonholes every 19th and 20th row 10 times.

SLEEVES
Cast on 50 [ 52, 54 ] sts. 

Work patt as for back, inc 1 st each side every 1 in 6 [ 3 , 0  ] times, every ¾ in 14 [ 18, 22 ] times.

Work even until about 17 ½ ins from beg on 90 [ 94, 98 ] sts, end with same patt row as back at underarm.

At beg of next 2 rows, bind off 6 [ 7, 8 ] sts. 

Dec 1 st each side every 2nd row 9 times; every 4th row 7 [ 7, 8 ] times; every 2nd row 3 [ 4, 3 ] times. 

Bind off 3 sts at beg of next 4 rows.  Bind off 28 [ 28, 30 ] sts.

COLLAR:  Left Half --
Cast on 24 sts for back edge.

1st row:  Right side -- P.

2nd row:  K

* 3rd row: Inserting needle in back loop of sts, k first 2 sts tog, k to within 2 sts of end, inc 1 st in next st, k 1.

4th row:  P.

Repeat last 2 rows 3 times.

Next row:  Dec as before, p to within 2 sts of end, inc 1 st in next st, p 1, k 1 row.

Repeat from * 4 times, binding off on the last K row. 

Work right Half to correspond [ inc in first st, k the last 2 sts tog ].

FINISHING
Sew seams. 

Sew in sleeves with seam at center underarm, matching stripes.

Working from right side, work row of sc around neck edge, lower edge of jacket and lower edge of sleeves.

Sew collar pieces to their respective sides, sewing to within 18 sts of each front edge, as illustrated and lapping ends of collar about ½ in at center back.

On each front edge, work 1 row consisting of 1 sc, ch 1, keeping work flat, same way on long edges of collar.

Finish buttonholes. 

For better fit, sew ribbon around waistline to hold it firm.

SKIRT
On circular needle cast on 450 [ 468, 486 ] sts and join with care not to twist sts on needle.  Mark ends of rnds.

1st rnd:  * K 14, p 4, repeat from * to end. 

Work even for 2 ½ ins on 25 [ 26, 27 ] patt stripes.

1st dec rnd:  * K 6, k 2 tog, k 6, p 4; repeat from * to end. 

Work even for 2 ½ ins on 425 [ 442, 469 ] sts.  When measuring, always include last dec rnd.

2nd dec rnd:  Dec 1 st in center of every k stripe. 

Continue to dec 1 st in center of every k stripe every 2 ½  ins 4 times more.

Work even until 18 ins from lower edge, or to within 8 ½ ins of desired blocked length, 300n [ 312, 324 ] sts.

7th dec rnd:  Hipline --Dec as before.  Work even for 2 ½ ins on 275 [ 286, 297 ] sts.

8th dec rnd: 
For sizes 14 and 16, work dec rnd as before. 
For size 18, * work dec on 2 k stripes, omit dec on next k stripe, repeat from * to end. 

Work even for 2 ½ ins on 250 [ 260, 279 ] sts.

Last dec rnd:  K all k sts, p 2 tog twice in each p stripe 200 [ 208, 225 ] sts.

Work even until 25 ins from lower edge or until desired length.  Bind off.

FINISHING: 
Work row sc around lower edge, keeping edge even. 

Work casing for elastic. 

Block to desired length.
