1939 Jiffy Knit Two-Piece Dress #103

This is the kind of dress that fairly flies from your knitting needles. 
The openwork mesh textures & shoulder zippers are very smart.

SIZE:  16

MATERIALS: 
Royal Society Beau-Marl, 10 skeins [2 oz skeins]
Milward’s Phantom Knitting Pins, 1 pair each #1 [2 ½ mm] & #3 [3 mm].
29” Circular Knitting Pin #3 [3 mm].
Milward’s Steel Crochet Hook #6 or #7.
Two 8” Zippers.                    
1 yd Elastic.

MEASUREMENTS AFTER BLOCKING:
BLOUSE: 
Bust - 36”. 
Length from top of shoulder - 17 ½“. 
Length of sleeve, underarm seam - 5”.
SKIRT: 
Waist - 30”. 
Hips - 38”. 
Length - 28”. 
Width at hem - 66”.

GAUGE: 
[Before blocking] 4 V sts = 1”;   6 rows = 1”.

BLOUSE:  BACK: 
Start at bottom, with #1 needles cast on 100 sts & work in ribbing of k2, p 2, for 3”. 

Change to #3 needles & k across, inc 40 sts at equal distances apart [140 sts]. 

Work in patt as follows:
1st Row:  * P 2 tog, O. Rep from * across, end with p 2 tog.

2nd Row:  K the 1st st, * drop the O, k the next st.  Rep from * across [there will be ½ as many sts as on 1st row].

3rd Row:  *Pick up the st of prev row & k it, p next st on needle.  Rep from * across [same number of sts as on 1st row]. 

1st to 3rd rows incl constitute patt. 

Work in patt for 8”.  

Then cast on 40 sts at end of each of next 2 rows, for sleeves [220 sts]. 

Cont in patt for 6 ½”, end with 3rd row.  Bind off loosely.

FRONT: 
Work exactly as for Back. 

Sew up underarm & sleeve seams. 

Find center of Front neck edge; meas off 4” on both sides, & mark with colored thread [these 8” are for neck opening]. 

Sew a zipper across next 8” [shoulders] at both sides of marked-off 8”. 

Sew zippers in corresponding positions on Back shoulders.

SKIRT: 
Start at bottom, with circular knitting pin cast on 528 sts. 

Join, be careful not to twist sts, & p 1 rnd, k 1 rnd, p 1 rnd. 

Now work in patt as follows:
1st Rnd:  * P 2 tog, O. Rep from * around.

2nd Rnd:  P 1st st, * drop O, p next st.  Rep from * around [there will be ½ as many sts on 1st rnd].

3rd Rnd:  * Pick up st of prev rnd & k it, p next st on needle.  Rep from * around [same number of sts as on 1st rnd]. 

1st to 3rd rnds incl constitute patt. 

Work in patt for 2 ½“. 

** On next rnd, dec 12 sts, 2 at a time, at equal distances--to dec. 2 sts on 1st rnd of patt make [O, p 3 tog], twice; to dec 2 sts on 2nd rnd of patt, sl 1 st as if to p, drop O, sl slipped st back onto left-hand needle & p 2 tog., cont in patt; [omit picking up st of prev rnd, p next st] twice; cont in patt. 

Work 4 rnds straight. 

Rep from ** until 312 sts rem on 1st or 3rd rnd of patt. 

Work straight until piece meas 20”. 

Cont dec 12 sts as before on every 5th rnd until 240 sts rem on 1st or 3rd rnd of patt.  

Work straight until piece meas 26”, end with 3rd rnd of patt.  Bind off, but do not break off.

CASING: 
With crochet hook, pick up rem st & work rnd of sc all around waistline.  At end of rnd, * ch 6, sl st in 5th rnd on wrong side & 4 sts to left; ch 6, sl st in 6th st from last st at top edge.  Rep from * around.  Fasten off. 

FINISHING: 
Run elastic through casing, & sew short ends tog. 

Work rnd of sc around bottom of skirt.
