Vintage 1946 Open-Crown Hat & Tote Bag Set #1069

Beau-Catchers…the new air-conditioned open-crown hat with a big shining bow…& its matching Carry-All.  Make it in your favorite color for your favored costume.

HAT SIZE:
Medium headsize

MATERIALS
HAT:
Bucilla Strawkraft
OR
Fleisher’s Straw-Twist, 4 balls
1 Steel Crochet Hook #0
Wide Satin Ribbon
Narrow Grosgrain Ribbon

BAG:
Bucilla Strawkraft
OR
Fleisher’s Straw-Twist, 4 balls
1 Steel Crochet Hook #3
Lining Material

GAUGE
HAT:
Entire hat is made using 2 strands of yarn.
7 sts = 1 ½”
9 rows = 2”
BAG:
6 sts = 1”


HAT:
CROWN:
Ch 100, join with sl st.

1ST RND:  1 Sc in each st, mark end of rnd; do not join.

Work in back lp of sts.

Cont around working 1 sc in each st until 6 rnds from beg.

7TH RND:  Fold lower edge up on wrong side.

Cont around working 1 sc in back lp of each st tog with corresponding st on foundation ch, sk every 10th st around; 90 sts.

Work 3 rnds even.

11TH RND:  2 Sc in first st, 1 sc in each of 9 sts, 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of 69 sts, 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in each st to end; 93 sts.

Work 3 rnds even.

15TH RND:  Work as for 11th rnd, inc in 3rd, 8th & 90th st; 96 sts.

Work 7 rnds even.

Sl st in next st; do not break yarn.

BRIM:
1ST RND:  Turn, cont working in back lp, 1 sc in each of 8 sts, * 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts; rep from * 26 times, 1 sc in each st to end of rnd; 123 sts.

Work even [in back lp] until there are 10 rnds.  Fasten off.

Fold brim at 8th rnd.

Sew back lp of sts in last rnd to horizontal lps on of wrong side of 5th rnd.

Cut 2 pieces of narrow, grosgrain ribbon, each 8” long.

Knot 1 piece around other at center.

Sew ends of ribbon at center front, center back & at center of each side, on side of crown about ¾” from top.

Trim with wide ribbon as illustrated.


BAG:
Ch 5, join with sl st; ch 3.

1ST RND:  Work 14 dc in ring [15 sts counting ch 3 as dc]; join this & every dc rnd with sl st in top of ch 3.

2ND RND:  Ch 3, 1 dc in same st as sl st, 2 dc in each st; 30 sts.

3RD RND:  Ch 3, * 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next st; rep from *, end 2 dc in last st; 45 sts.

4TH RND:  Ch 3, 1 dc in next st, * 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in each of 2 sts; rep from *, end 2 dc in last st; 60 sts. 

Continue in this way to inc 15 sts every rnd, having 1 st more bet incs in each rnd, until there are 8 rnds; 120 sts.

9TH RNDWorking in back loop of each st, sk 1st st, 1 sc in each st to end of end; 119 sts. 

Do not join, continue around working 1 sc in back loop of each st until 6 rnds of sc in all.  Mark end of rnds.

15TH RND:  PATTERN:  Working in both loops, work * 1 sc in each of next 2 sts, ch 1, sk 1 st, 1 sc in each of 3 sts, ch 1, sk 1 st; rep from * to end, continue around. 

Work 2 rnds sc.

18TH RND1 Sc in each of 4 sts, draw up a long loop thru 1st ch 1 sp 3 rows below, * draw up another long loop thru next ch 1 sp in the same rnd, yo, thru all loops on hook, sk 1 st, 1 sc in each of 6 sts, draw up a long loop thru next ch 1 sp 3 rows below *, rep between *’s, end with long loop in last ch 1 sp, yo, thru all loops, sk 1 st, 1 sc in each of last 2 sts. 

Rep 15th to 18th rnd 8 times. 

Work 1 sc in back loop of each st for 6 rnds, sl st in next st.  Fasten off.

HANDLE BANDS:  Make 2: 
Ch 11, 1 sc in 2nd & each st of ch. 

Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each st. 

Rep last row 8 times.  Fasten off.

LINE BAG
Finished Linings with zippers attached may be purchased ready-made; or may be made using suitable lining material & buckram for stiffening. 

Cut buckram ¼” smaller than bag on all sides, cover with lining & sew into bag with zipper at opening. 

Ch 15, work 2 rows sc on ch. 

Attach ring to slide pull with this piece. 

Fasten handles with band to each side of bag, as illustrated.

Note:  Cardboard or lightweight plastic may be inserted between bag & lining to give shape of bag extra support.
