Vintage 1958 Vogue Red, White & Blue Cardigan Sweater #707


Everything to make it becoming.  Extremely smart red, white & blue cardigan with bands of color knitted right in, so they look like ribbon.  A fashionable vintage design, & a season-spanning, wardrobe favorite!

SIZES: 
12, 14, & 16.
Directions are for size 12 with changes for sizes 14 & 16 in brackets.

MATERIALS:
Bear Brand or Fleisher’s Nylon ‘n Wool, 1 oz: 8 [9-10] skeins navy [A]; 1 each of red [B] & white [C]
Pair #1 & #3 knitting needles
7 Buttons

GAUGE:
8 sts = 1” on #3 needles

BACK: 
With A & #1 needles, cast on 136 [144-152] sts for facing.

Work in stockinette st [p 1, k 1 row] until 2” from beg, end with k row.

K 1 row on wrong side, inserting needle in back of sts [hemline].

Change to #3 needles.

Work even until 12” from hemline.

Mark centre of last row.

SHAPE ARMHOLES: 
Bind off 8 [9-10] sts at beg of next 2 rows.

Dec 1 st each end every other row 8 [9-10] times – 104 [108-112] sts.

Work even until 7” [7 ¼”-7 ½”] from marker.

SHAPE SHOULDERS:
Bind off 7 sts at beg of next 10 [6-2] rows; then 8 sts at beg of next 0 [4-8] rows.

Bind off rem 34 sts.

LEFT FRONT:
With A & #1 needles, cast on 68 [72-76] sts for facing.

P 1 row, k 1 row until 2” from beg, end with k row.

Cast on 17 sts for front band & facing – 85 [89-93] sts.
K 1 row on wrong side, inserting needle into back of sts for hemline.

NEXT ROW:  K to within 9 sts of end, with yarn at back sl 1 as to p for turning st, k to end.

P 1 row.

Rep these last 2 rows throughout.

Work even until 2” from turning ridge.

Change to #3 needles.

Work even until same length as back to underarm.

Mark centre of last row.

SHAPE ARMHOLE & WORK STRIPE MOTIF:
At arm edge, bind off 8 [9-10] sts, k to within 53 sts of end; with B, k to end slipping turning st as before – 77 [80-83] sts.

When changing colors always bring color to be used under last color used to prevent holes.

NEXT ROW:  With B, p 53, with A, p to end.

Cont to shape armhole as for right armhole as of back & working stripe on 53 sts at front edge until there are 10 rows of B.

With A only, work 2 rows.

Cont armhole shaping & with C work 10 rows on 53 sts at front edge for 2nd stripe.

With A, work 2 rows, working all sts with A – 69 [71-73] sts.

Work even rep 1st 22 rows of stripes on 53 sts at front edge.

With A, work even until 6” [6 ¼”-6 ½”] from marker, end at front edge.

SHAPE NECK & SHOULDER: 
Bind off 24 sts at beg of next row.

Dec 1 st at neck every row 10 times; at same time, shape shoulder as for back when armhole is same length as back to shoulder.

Mark position of 7 buttons evenly spaced along front border, having 1st one 1” from turning ridge at lower edge & 7th one ½” below neck edge.

RIGHT FRONT:
With A & #1 needles, cast on 68 [72-76] sts.

Work as for left front for 2”, end with k row.

K 1 row on wrong side, inserting needle in back of sts [turning ridge].

With separate strand of A, cast on 17 sts on free needle for front band & facing, k these sts to same needle with sts of right front, inserting needle in back of sts for turning ridge – 85 [89-93] sts.

NEXT ROW:  K 8 for facing with yarn at back sl 1 as to p for turning st, k to end.

P 1 row.

Rep last 2 rows until 1” from turning ridge, end at front edge.

BUTTONHOLE:
K 2, bind off 3 sts, work until 7 sts from bind-off, bind off 3 sts, work across.

NEXT ROW:  Cast on 3 sts over each bound-off st.

Work even until 2” from turning ridge.

Change to #3 needles.

Work even for ½”, end on wrong side.

STRIPE MOTIF:
With A, work 41 [43-45] sts, with B, k to end.

Cont stripe motif on 44 [46-48] sts at underarm edge to correspond to motif on left front until there are 4 stripes, working buttonholes to correspond to position of buttons.

Finish to correspond to left front, reverse shaping.

SLEEVES:
With A & #1 needles, cast on 72 [74-76] sts.

P 1 row, k 1 row until 2” from beg, end with k row.

K 1 row from wrong side, inserting needle into back of sts for turning ridge.

K 1 row, p 1 row until 2” from turning ridge, inc 6 [8-10] sts evenly spaced across last row – 78 [82-86] sts.

Change to #3 needle.

Cont to work in stockinette st, inc 1 st each end every 1” 9 times – 96 [100-104] sts.

Work even until 12 ½” from turning ridge.

SHAPE CAP: 
Bind off 5 sts at beg of next 2 rows.

Dec 1 st each end every other row 25 [27-29] times -- 36 sts.

Bind off 3 sts at beg of next 4 rows.

Bind off rem 24 sts.

COLLAR:
With C & #3 needles, cast on 104 sts firmly for neck edge of facing.

P 1 row.

INC ROW:
* K 4, inc 1 st in next st; rep from * 19 times more, k to end --124 sts.

P 1 row, k 1 row for 14 rows.

K 1 row from wrong side, inserting needle in back of sts for turning ridge.

K 1 row, p 1 row for 16 rows [2 rows more than facing].

DEC ROW:
* K 4, k 2 tog; rep from * 19 times more, k to end --104 sts.

P 1 row.

Bind off tightly as to k.

FINISHING:
Sew seams.  Sew in sleeves.

Turn under facings & sew to wrong side.

Weave top & lower edges of front band & facings tog.

Buttonhole st around buttonholes working thru both thicknesses.

Sew side edges of collar tog & sew to neck edge with facings on wrong side & ends of collar at inner edge of front bands.

Sew on buttons.
